what are your fave warrior nun fics?

Oh, anon. You don't even know the can of worms you've just opened. Here are a few (a few!) of my favorites.

Firstly, teach me to love, as you have loved me by @birgittesilverbae. It's in the POV of Beatrice as she grows up in the OCS, putting Shannon, Mary and Lilith in the limelight as well, and the most recent chapter (12k!) has gone through essentially all of canon. It's about grief and family and warmth and loss and it's so fucking good. Cannot recommend this more.

Next I have sunday people (sunday shines for you) by @piratekane. Sundays are for the girls, by the way. if you even care. This is peak pining behavior, miscommunication that isn't just there for the dramatics, and Ava being The Best Girl Ever (and the most jealous girl ever). Fantastic fic.

Then there's show me something of a reckoning by @thirteenyasmin, which is a given, of course. Switzerland canon-divergent fic where, as the tags say, fake-dating becomes real-dating. As they deserve. Has some lines that will tear your soul to pieces in the best way.

Next is Nice jugs, a climbing AU by @cowboycatd. Do you know anything about climbing? No? Me, neither. But this series of fics describes it--alongside exceptionally-written flirting--masterfully. You should read Climbing AU.

Then I have falling (for you) like snow on christmas by @justawhitewall. Hallmark movie AU! They're much better when they're Avatrice, by the way. I read it during the posting and have reread it at least once a month ever since. Incredible.

Spellbound by @omomoification. Witch (kinda) AU! Will sweep you away into the world that's created and you won't even notice as the 15k goes by in a flash. Fucking gorgeous piece of art. Made me insane, made some people break the character limit while commenting.

the imprint of your soul on mine (feels nothing short of divine) by @the-penguinspy. Read this if you're feeling down, because you won't be when you're done. The softest thing you could ever read, and I read a lot of soft things. Fic that gives you a hug and a gentle kiss on the top of your head.

And last but certainly not least, A Bit of Earth by @whatwordsmiss. Full fic isn't posted yet but it is written, and this story is just... wonderful. It's about grief, it's about growing up, it's about falling in love and healing together and healing apart and being kind and, sometimes, in particular moments, it's about a Garden. A must-read.

You know, for a show with so many female characters that so many of us love given how they all get time in the spotlight one way or another and they fill that time up rather wonderfully since they are deeper and more developed than what we're used to seeing in general media, it is peculiar (to say the least) to see so few "alternative" ships to the main one.

I'm not saying the canon ship doesn't deserve its attention -- I'm wondering instead why the canon ship and it alone seem to guide the WN fans who just so happen to enjoy writing/reading fic or fanart or whatever.

You'd think all these cool women would inspire more ships or combinations thereof, but those of us who aren't invested in avatrice just... Float along, around one another, ignored (and, yes, mostly undisturbed too; being unpopular does have its advantages and that includes a lot less weirdos leaving you strange or awkward messages -- it does not, however, shield us from people flooding our goddamn tags on AO3 with fic that has nothing to do with our little ships and I do wish such negligence of the pairing itself meant we didn't have to deal with this spam...)

I am also not saying that fandom activity should be based solely on shipping (and recently someone on Reddit was rather confused by the fact that a lot of it is, which is quite an interesting topic to discuss in itself -- after all, there is more to fan creativity than shippy fic... Or there used to be), merely that, here, it appears that a canon relationship can outshine interest in the other, non-canon ones. It's already there and it was doubtless well-done by the show, so it's natural that it should claim people's attention, sure. It's just that being canon was never the parameter for whether people were interested in these or those two (or more) characters maybe being involved and trying to explore what that could mean through fanwork.

There has always been a complaint haunting fandom spaces concerning the minuscule amounts of f/f fic, art, discussion, w/e based on how few (interesting or sympathetic or relatable) female characters there are in media at large. So what I'm curious about is why fan creations made around WN -- a show that finally gives us a whole cast of female characters that are what we have been craving for decades -- don't also reflect its diversity.

There are alternative ships (I'm here, all happy in my tiny Doctor Superion bubble, and I know there are Camila/Lilith, Ava/Lilith, Mary/Shannon, Mary/Lilith shippers out there, so a warm hello to you if you're reading this), but go on AO3 and compare the numbers of things tagged with these proper pairings to the grand total of WN stories. Better (or worse) still, do so with the "otp: true" trick or simply by excluding avatrice from the search to see how many are left.

It's... A considerable difference. And a mystery, at least to me.

3. the haunting of bly manor - dani and jamie! the blueprint! there's literally no other ship like them! the chemistry was insane there, the development of their relationship was flawless and i'll stand by this forever. their scenes in the show >>>>> so many actual lesbian movies

4. warrior nun - avatrice! okay actually They have the best relationship development ever. it was so subtle in s1 but so obvious if you looked with your gay heart and then in s2 just ep1 was better than most ships out there but then Tragedy™ struck and fuck they were taken from us way too soon!!!

5. fear street - sam and deena! listen there are so many more fandom and choosing one was So Tough but ao3 tells me they're my top 3 fandom i've written the most for so here we are! love lesbians that won't drive 30 minutes for their gf but will and evil ancient curse like it's nothing for her!! and her gf that will die and die and die and die for her <3

1. She-Ra

I didn't like season 5 as much as everyone else seems to. I know that it was the last season they got and they had to wrap up relatively quickly, but Catra's redemption felt rushed in places, especially after seeing her "regression" arc develop over four seasons vs the one season of redemption. I think she got forgiven by others a bit too easily (mainly Scorpia she deserved so much better and Catra treated her horribly and took advantage of her for years and suddenly all is forgiven and hugs all around). There was clearly a plan on how the redemption would unfold and i think it could have worked if we got more episodes or one more season, but they just didn't have enough episodes to pace it more organically i think. They did well with the episodes they were given though, but as a whole it was unsatisfying for me. Also I watched it right after rewatching atla so after seeing how fleshed out Zuko's redemption arc was (who we saw redeem himself outside of the main group, apologizing to his uncle, and then the one on one forgiveness episodes to develop individual relationships with each main character) it was underwhelming

2. Legends of Tomorrow

I just don't really care about avalance. Lowkey stopped watching for a while because I got tired of them. They had their moments and they grew on me eventually but overall their relationship didn't really interest me

3. Warrior nun

Lots of people think the bar scene is when ava realized her feelings for beatrice but i think she realized her feelings sometime between s1 and s2 (she HAD feelings in s1 but didnt realize it til later)

Also as much as i love avatrice i really hope we get to see ava and beatrice's relationships with OTHER characters develop. i want to see more ava and camila friendship, i want to see beatrice and lilith (they grew up together!! i wanna see this!! and now suddenly they were on opposite sides of a fight after being allies and now are they going to rebuild that trust?), I wanna see more ava and lilith (both of them had the responsibilities of being/becoming the warrior nun both of them had all that pressure i wanna see them bond about it i want their begrudging friendship); I WANT TO SEE MARY AND LILITH INTERACTING WITH EACH OTHER

4. Heroes of Olympus

sorry but will and nico felt forced in the way that leo and calypso felt forced: seems like rick just took a random background character just for the sake of pairing up a main character :// at least its more interesting in terms of the juxtaposition of the brooding son of death vs the optimistic and bright son of the sun. honestly tho overall most of the non-percabeth ships i dont have strong feelings about because rick just....didnt build them up as much, i didnt really feel the /build up/ of any romantic feelings for any other couple, despite heroes of olympus also being 5 books (probably due to the fact that there were too many main characters rick had to create and develop alongside the plot and there wasnt room to do both well). Lowkey i think it would have been better that if he were to make nico and will mains in trials of apollo, he could have had them officially meet and get to know each other as friends/allies and then develop romantic feelings throughout those 5 books. As it is and how i felt after BoO, it seems like at the end of BoO, nico returns to CHB and gets a crush on the first cute guy he sees and then that just automatically means he gets to date him (HOWEVER i havent read toa yet and mb ill like them more in that and i do want to read tsats....cant say id say the same for a stand alone leo x calypso book)

5. Class of '07/Parks and Rec

This is more of a gripe with the trope in a lot of sitcoms of the (usually) fat nerdy/oblivious soft-spoken character being constantly brushed aside and dismissed. Eg Laura (ie forgettable Laura, whose whole nickname is about how everyone ignores her, she's constantly interrupted when she tries to actually be helpful to the group etc) and Garry/Jerry (constantly belittled, getting misnamed even on his tombstone). Overall not a fan of having a character whose sole purpose is to be mocked constantly

Finished a quick Brooklyn 99 Rosa x Amy fic today because I’ve been rewatching it and the potential for these two has been giving me brainworms and they deserve more content on AO3, so I wrote some.

oh..... this is also difficult because you KNOW how much I love my yellowjackets girls, they mean everything to me (I've ranted to you about the lesbian cannibal show a dozen times) but uh...

I'll offer to sleep on the floor for nat.... cause we'll, she's the antler queen, and she gets whatever she wants, and I am not one to argue with her. she knows how to use a gun, and she is not afraid to use it

and as much as I hate this, I'm making van sleep on the floor, I love her. truly, but this is a hard decision, but I don't think she'd mind, hopefully. it depends if it's teen van or adult van

and well, I'm snuggling with jackie because she deserves all the love and snuggles in the world okay? she's my doomed by the narrative baby <3 I can't say no to her

Warrior Nun has my whole heart.

It needs to be renewed! Everything about the show is so perfect; the plot, the storytelling, the characters, their growth and their relationships with each other, the cinematography, and don't even get me started on the detailing. Literal perfection! So well written indeed!

We need to save this show. The divinium sword lighting up in the end gives us hope.

Let's not forget Net-fucking-flix did not want this shot to be there and wanted to end the episode after Ava goes through the portal which- now don't come after me, we would've been okay with. (no I'm actually lying that was so not okay, I was heartbroken to say the least) After all, we know better than to expect a happy ending for a w/w couple, thanks to you-know-who for cancelling almost all sapphic shows to ever exist!

But lighting up the divinium sword in the end like that only to cancel the show?!!? HELL NO! THAT'S NOT DONE!

You don't make the fans feel like home with the show and then snatch the fucking roof off their head!

We will continue to fight for as long as it takes. We have hope. We will save this show.

And have no doubt. After all, like Beatrice says, "Faith is my business"

The headcanon that won't let me live is that Beatrice has a PAST and SKILLS and Ava has no idea what she's getting into. Like a past where she has done and experienced things that would lead to her parents saying that she's "not falling in line" and shipping her off to Catholic boarding school.

She would have had to be 18 to join any order and then needed at least a year (even on Beatrice's expedited time) to take her vows, which means that there's a chance she was 15 or 16 or older when she "wasn't falling in line" and there's no guarantee she immediately behaved once she was at an all-girls boarding school. This is also sophisticated, educated Beatrice we're talking about and she would have been exceptional at all the sports and academics and activities and any queer woman in her vicinity would have PAID ATTENTION to her and her sharp jaw and dark eyes.

And that's what Ava doesn't know. Ava thinks that Beatrice, restrained, controlled, buttoned up Beatrice, never made out let alone slept with anyone and she thinks she knows what Beatrice is capable of. When in reality Beatrice, strong, competent, intense Beatrice, was also exceptional at being gay. That was exactly the problem. She wasn't blind to the way other girls would look at her and she was great at kissing them and meticulous, kind, dedicated Beatrice was incredible at getting them to fall apart under her. That's the twist Ava doesn't see coming: that OCS's crown jewel and biggest pride, Sister Beatrice, with hands more powerful and lethal than most weapons, can make those hands precise and gentle and more sinful than anything Ava ever imagined.
